INTRO:
i know there is a professional pencil fighting tournaments now all over the USA. i haven't read enough to know what are the terms they use today. but i'm just writing from memory cuz i played ALOT!!! i played soooo much i was really good at it. like, a fricken ACE good! cuz i would destroy peoples pencils on the FIRST TRY! i did it from elementary to middle school. i kinda stopped in the 7th grade cuz we just got to old for it lol. update: i just read some rules on "World Extreme Pencil Fighting League" from seattle. and they also use the words like bracing, bridging and chopping. but my definition is slightly different from theirs and from what i remembered.

Old School Woods aka (Pencil Fighting) Terminology
Woods:
this what it was always known to me aka "Pencil Fighting" i guess it was called in the California Bay Area. It was never called "pencil fighting" back then. i only heard of that term as of now. but this seems to be a generic term that people are using.

I Got First:
When calling stuff out before a match. this is usually said first to let them now you are first to strike.

Call it, Calling it:
Your demands before a match. (Basic Example: I got first, No Taps, No Bracing.) if they agree then the match begins with that person. if they don't agree you just keep going up to other people with your demands until you find someone who agrees.

No Bracing, Bracing:
Something said at the beggining of a match. It's a technique in holding your pencil. it's with your pointy fingers in a hook (like the drunken monkey technique if you ever seen one) and bending the pencil slightly upward with it. there are different degrees to it from slightly to obvious. it is done so it would lessen the impact of the other players strike. some people think it is cheating when you brace.. but that is unless they call it before the match. there are people who cheat by doing "unnoticable bracing" when it's been called not to brace.

No Bridge, No Bridging, Bridge, Bridging:
something called in the beginning of the match. it's another form of bracing, it's when you use your thumbs instead of your pointy fingers. some believe it is stronger than the usual bracing. this usually forces the player who's bridging to go on one knee or bend awkward because of the way he holds it. he goes into this "bridging stance" so the other player can properly strike it.

Taps, Tapping:
People would tap your pencil before striking it. it mentally prepared you and put you in a rhythm. it would give you a feel for it when striking. there's also a conspiracy some people believe it would weaken the persons pencil by tapping it every turn.

No Taps, No Tapping:
People would ask this at the beggining of the game. cuz some people tap really hard and it would make dents in your pencil. and for some, it make people feel awkward if they don't tap before striking. it's a mind game.

Eagle Pencils:
Some people say it's the best pencil because you can brace with it because it is bendable! not literally but you can put an arch in it. the pencils wood is different then the other regular wood used in pencils. but depending on who you ask some say its the weakest pencil type because it snaps easy. i just say they are playing against someone really good or they are not good at all. but when i was playing this was the most sought after pencil. so it's all your personal preference and what you believe in.

No Chopping, Chopping:
something you call in the beginning of a match when you notice someone doing this or probably after the first time doing it then he is told not to do it. usually people don't mind it. it is a technique in striking. it's when you swing with your body or with your arms rather than flicking with your wrist. it's almost like doing a karate chop but with your pencil. tho these technique isn't like an illegal move. but some people call not to do it cuz they feel their pencil would snap easily with this technique cuz it uses alotta force coming from the body.

Hold, Grip:
Holding the pencil horizontally so people can strike it.

Kung Fu Holds, Kung Fu Grips:
Unorthodox ways of holding, High Hold, Low Hold, Vertical Hold or Angled Hold. some people prefer you to hold your pencil sideways or at some weird angle when they strike it. i never used this but did it for so many people.. hey whatever works! and its your lost of turn.. but at least you look very professional. lol

Handicap:
you would handicap yourself against weaker players. like let them have two hits every round instead of one. i did this alot cuz i use to break peoples pencil on the first try. another one i saw was a person use a kindergarten pencil versus a regular pencil. the regular pencil had ten hits and the kindergarten pencil had one. if you don't know... kindergarten pencils are those really thick pencils!!!!!

Evidence:
Broken Pencils were called "evidence" cuz you would get in trouble if they were found. cuz playing woods is banned in schools. hardcore wood players would have a habit of picking up broken pencils off the ground and tossing them in garbage bins even if its not theirs. cuz they don't want to tip off teachers and custodians that their are people playing woods in that area.

Cheating Techniques:
usually the good players don't play against people with these type of pencils. for obvious reasons. but i seen this alot and avoided them too. biting the eraser metal enough to where it become so bumpy and full of jagged edges. it is done so it can shred pieces of wood off your pencil when striking. or sometimes they remove the eraser completely and bite down and clamp the metal together creating knife like edge. i seen this once, someone from my school removed the pencil lead and replace it with a small metal rod. when he used it against someone the pencil splintered apart and the metal rod was exposed. lol

Preparations:
Rip off the eraser and break of the pencil lead. if your pencil has an eraser and it hits the other pencil when striking. it won't do any damage but it's consider a hit. to solve this rip off the eraser. its better to miss and get another try then hit it with the eraser and lose a turn. also break the pencil lead cuz you can jam it into your hand. like me! when i first started to play i didn't break the lead off. the lead jammed deep inside my hand after striking and the lead broke inside my palm. the skin healed over the wound and you can still see the lead inside my hand from that tragic day. sad face =(

The karate chop joke:
it never happened to me or i've ever done it. but it's when you pretend you are going to play and you suddenly karate chop the other person's pencil with your hand. ahahahahaha! i seen it done hundreds of times!
